Matthew Musick

This is Matthew Todd Musick.

Matt is my nephew.

Matt is dead.

Matt was born on November 13, 1977 and was murdered on January 25, 2018 in Pomona, CA. He was my sister-in-law’s oldest child. According to the Pomona Police Department he was stabbed multiple times in the chest by a man with a yellow hat who reportedly escaped on a bicycle. No motive for the crime has been disclosed and there is no further description of the piece of shit who killed him. The police closed off the area and were looking for witnesses. I hope they meet with some success. Assholes like that can’t keep their mouth shut, so hopefully he’ll brag about it to someone who’ll turn him in.

Matt was a genius. He held a Masters of Science Degree in mathematics and was actively working on his doctorate. As a kid, he would build model rockets with his brother from scratch. He understood complex concepts easily and had a very curious mind. Matt was witty, quick and funny.

Matt was married to a wonderful girl who is studying to be a veterinarian. They have no children.

Matt didn’t deserve to die like this. No parent should ever have to bury a child.

If anyone has any information, please call the Pomona Police Department at (909) 620-2085. The best news article I’ve found so far can be found here. It will open in a new tab.

I’ve lost people that I cared for or loved. All of my grandparents are dead. My father died 4 years ago. When I was a senior, a classmate who also attended the church my father pastored died of a heart condition. An officer I’d known for over 30 years was killed in a traffic accident within days of his retirement.

This is the first person I was close to who died in a violent crime. It’s different. There was no long, linger illness. There was no injury that took his life days or weeks later. This was sudden and unexpected. It surprised me and brought me up short. What do you think when confronted with something like that? How do you react? What’s the right thing to say? What’s the wrong thing?

My wife told me about this 12 hours ago and I still can’t answer those questions.

I get the feeling that Matt isn’t the first person this shithead has killed, but I do pray that it is the last.

We are not worried about Matt now. We’re confident that Matt is in heaven. My wife was close to him and has had several very deep conversations about life, God, death, Heaven, and other aspects of life that most people don’t really consider talking about.

That helps. A little.

But Matt is still gone, and we’re going to miss him.

  1. Thank you for sharing this on your blog. Jack and Jeannie were very close friends of ours. We went to Bible College together, lived in the same apartments and worked together at Synthane Taylor in La Verne. We drove to college together every day. Matthew and my son were the same age, and grew up playing together. You are correct about Matthew being a genius. I remember when he was 3 years old and figured out how to turn all the water off to the apartment complex that we lived in. What a terrible shock. Thank you for the post.
